It is believed that a Post Office was established in Bagdad around 1867.  President McKinley appointed Miss Mary Joyner as Post Mistress in 1896 and she served until her retirement in 1940. Prior to her appointment, she was employed as a stenographer in the Bagdad Sawmill offices and lived next door to the building which later became the
Post Office.

Originally, mail was delivered twice weekly by boat from New Orleans. By 1940, mail came by train and a messenger was dispatched to pick up mail from the Milton train depot and deliver it to the Post Office.

The Old Bagdad Post Office, pictured above, was built in 1913 and used continually until 1986 when the new post office was opened on Forsyth Street.  The building was donated to the BVPA  in 1992 by the heirs of
Mrs. Gertrude Gauger.

Your support is needed to help restore this quaint and historic building. Original Post Office Boxes are being sold to memorialize or honor loved ones. An engraved brass plaque will be affixed to each box once renovation is completed. A limited number of boxes are available starting at $75.
