It is believed that a Post Office was established in
Bagdad around 1867. President McKinley appointed Miss Mary
Joyner as Post Mistress in 1896 and she served until her retirement in
1940. Prior to her appointment, she was employed as a stenographer in the
Bagdad Sawmill offices and lived next door to the building which later
became the Originally, mail was delivered twice weekly by boat from New Orleans. By 1940, mail came by train and a messenger was dispatched to pick up mail from the Milton train depot and deliver it to the Post Office. The Old Bagdad Post Office, pictured above, was built in
1913 and used continually until 1986 when the new post office was opened
on Forsyth Street. The building
was donated to the BVPA in 1992 by the heirs of Your support is needed to help restore this quaint and
historic building. Original Post Office Boxes are being sold to
memorialize or honor loved ones. An engraved brass plaque will be
affixed to each box once renovation is completed. A limited number of
boxes are available starting at $75. |
