Bagdad Cemetery contains vaults, headstones and iron works marking the graves of sawmill owners, workers and veterans of the Civil War dating back to the mid 1800’s. The cemetery, still in use today, is the final resting place of many local families as well as the sons and daughters of Spain, England, Scotland, Norway, France and Germany. The names engraved here reflect Bagdad’s pioneers: Forsyth, Simpson, Dorr, Carter, Allen, Creary, Sindorf and Bruce. An impressive nine foot obelisk, pictured above, adorns the grave of Bagdad founder and State Senator, Joseph Forsyth, who died in 1855. He was laid to rest next to his daughter who died of yellow fever in 1852. It is reported that Forsyth was buried in a standing position because he wished to have an unobstructed view of his beloved saw mill for as long as it was in operation.
